What is Bastille Day?
THE BASTILLE
A SYMBOL OF ROYAL POWER
Rising over central Paris, the Bastille began life as a medieval fortress before becoming a state prison.
By 1789 it stood for something greater than stone and turrets. It was the very symbol of royal authority, the old order that so many longed to see change.
Its walls held more than prisoners, they held power itself.
THE STORMING BEGINS
On the 14th of July 1789, the streets of Paris filled with people ready for change.
Crowds gathered, tension rising, and together they marched upon the ancient fortress of the Bastille.
What followed became one of history’s defining moments, a spark that lit the flame of revolution. Paris, and France, would never be the same again.
THE PEOPLE
A CALL FOR CHANGE
Behind the storming of the Bastille lay years of real hardship, inequality and voices left unheard.
The people of France had grown weary of a system that served the few and forgot the many.
This was more than an uprising, it was a call for fairness, dignity and a fresh voice at the table of power.
THE FALL
A TURNING POINT
In truth, only a handful of prisoners were found within the Bastille’s ancient walls that day.
Yet the symbolism mattered far more than the numbers ever could. Its fall showed the people of France that royal power could be challenged and overcome.
Change, once just a whisper in the streets, had truly, deeply and unmistakably begun.
LA RÉVOLUTION
A NEW FRANCE
The events of 1789 set France upon a new path entirely, one built on liberty, citizenship and a shared national identity.
These ideas still echo proudly today, woven into the very spirit of the country.
Every 14th July, France marks this moment as its national day, La Fête Nationale, honouring how far the nation has come.
14TH JULY, LA FÊTE NATIONALE
In France, celebration often begins around the table.
Good food, good wine and good company are central to the occasion, from long lunches to relaxed evening meals.
Bastille Day is no different with gatherings, fireworks and celebrations enjoyed across the country.
